Mrs. Eiermann's 7-3 Science classes - Super 7-3 Scientists
Welcome to 7-3 science!! This year continues a brand new approach to science education in our district. We have adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and have created a new curriculum that focuses on learning through discovery, hands on activities and application. We will be covering topics in Life and Earth sciences this year.

I will try to put a copy of the presentation slides used in class onto my resources page for students who were absent or would like to take another look at them after class. Please check out the resources link and scroll to the bottom. They are also frequently uploaded to TEAMS along with articles and worksheets used as classwork and homework.
Please read the four documents below. Both parent/guardian and student must sign all 4 sections of the signature sheet which will be sent home the first day of school and return it to me no later than Tuesday 9/10/19. If you have any questions about any of them, please contact me.

Dear Parents and Students:
Welcome back to school. I am looking forward to an exciting and challenging year. In order to start the year off right, each student will need the following in class every day:
SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Numbers 1-4 must be with the student in class every day.
1. An 8 ½ X 11 inch 3-ring loose-leaf binder with three sections: 1 section labelled class notes, 1 section labelled Do Nows and 1 section labelled homework. No spiral or tear-out notebooks please. Do not share your science notebook with other subjects. Having a single notebook dedicated to science will help your student be better organized which leads to greater success in the classroom. The binder should be no bigger than 1 1/2 to 2". Larger binders are too cumbersome to carry from class to class. They will be instructed when to clean out their bindrs as we move from unit to unti.
2. Loose-leaf paper (plenty to last the year).
3. At least 3 pencils or pens (blue and black ink only) in class at all times.
4. School agenda book to copy homework and used for corresponding with parents. This must be with them in order to leave the classroom for any reason.
5. A box of tissues to help get through the cold/allergy seasons (they can earn extra credit for their first test/quiz!).
6. These must all be dedicated to science, no sharing of notebooks please.
1. Homework is worth 20% of your grade. It is given and checked daily. Homework must be completed and placed in the homework folder during AM homeroom. After AM homeroom it is considered late and will receive half credit. Half credit will also be given if it is not placed in the correct homework folder in AM homeroom or one day late for marking periods 1-2. Zero credit after that. If a student is absent, he/she will have the number of days indicated in the student handbook to make up the missed homework. During the 3rd and 4th marking periods no credit will be given for a day late. This helps prepare them for 8th grade.
2. Quizzes and class participation are worth 25% of your grade. Participation is recorded throughout the marking period and includes reading aloud, answering and asking relevent questions. Open notes Do Now quizzes are included in this category.
3. Labs, projects and presentations are worth 25% of your grade.
4. Tests and test equivalent assignments are worth 30% of your grade.
5. Extra projects will be assigned a value when given.

Mrs. Eiermann’s Cheating and Plagiarism Policy
Examples of academic dishonesty include but are not limited to:
- Copying assignments from others or allowing others to copy from you
- Looking at another student’s test or quiz or allowing another student to look at your test or quiz
- Sending, receiving or using information or any electronic device such as a computer, cell phone, PDA, graphing calculator or programmable watch during a test or quiz
- Possession or use of unauthorized materials obtained from any source including notes written on body parts or clothing during a test or quiz
- Talking, signaling and/or passing information during a test or quiz
- Changing an answer after work as been graded, then presenting it as improperly graded
- Sharing answers on a take-home exam, or asking/allowing another student to take the exam for you
- Obtaining or seeing a test, quiz or answer key before the test without teacher permission
- Discussing or providing information about a quiz or test with students who have not yet completed the assessment
- Retaining, copying, possessing, using or circulating previously given exam materials
- Submitting text or another’s ideas from an encyclopedia, book, textbook, website, database or any other source as your own without proper citation
- Hiring someone to write your paper. Buying a paper or project. Allowing others to do the research and/or writing of an assigned paper for you. Turning in a paper retrieved from an internet source, whether for a fee or free
- Allowing another person to do your work, then submitting that work under your own name
- Falsifying or inventing information, data and/or citations
- Changing grades on an assessment, in a grade book or in a grading program
- Allowing a partner or other group members to do all the work, then putting your name on the final report. Putting the name of a group member or partner on a final report when that person did not contribute to the final product
- A zero on the assignment with no opportunity to make it up for credit
- Parent/Guardian notification

Student Safety Contract

PURPOSE Science is a hands-on laboratory class. However, science activities may have potential hazards. We will use some equipment and animals that may be dangerous if not handled properly. Safety in the science classroom is an important part of the scientific process. To ensure a safe classroom, a list of rules has been developed and is called the Science Safety Contract. These rules must be followed at all times. Additional safety instructions will be given for each activity. No science student will be allowed to participate in science activities until this contract has been signed by both the student and a parent or guardian. SAFETY RULES 1. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the science room. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks will not be tolerated. 2. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. Ask your teacher questions if you do not understand the instructions. 3. Do not touch any equipment, supplies, animals, or other materials in the science room without permission from the teacher. 4. Perform only authorized and approved experiments. Do not conduct any experiments when the teacher is out of the room. 5. Never eat, drink, chew gum, or taste anything in the science room. 6. Keep hands away from face, eyes, and mouth while using science materials or when working with either chemicals or animals. Wash your hands with soap and water before leaving the science room. 7. Wear safety glasses or goggles when instructed. Never remove safety glasses or goggles during an experiment. There will be no exceptions to this rule! 8. Keep your work area and the science room neat and clean. Bring only your laboratory instructions, worksheets, and writing instruments to the work area. 9. Clean all work areas and equipment at the end of the experiment. Return all equipment clean and in working order to the proper storage area. 10. Follow your teacher’s instructions to dispose of any waste materials generated in an experiment. 11. Report any accident (fire, spill, breakage, etc.), injury (cut, burn, etc.), or hazardous condition (broken equipment, etc.) to the teacher immediately.
12. Consider all chemicals used in the science room to be dangerous. Do not touch or smell any chemicals unless specifically instructed to do so. 13. Handle all animals with care and respect. a. Open animal cages only with permission. b. Never handle any animals when the teacher is out of the room. c. Do not take animals out of the science room. d. Do not tease or handle animals roughly. e. Keep animals away from students’ faces. f. Wear gloves when handling animals. g. Report any animal bite or scratch to the teacher immediately. 14. Always carry a microscope with both hands. Hold the arm with one hand; place the other hand under the base. 15. Treat all preserved specimens and dissecting supplies with care and respect. a. Do not remove preserved specimens from the science room. b. Use scalpels, scissors, and other sharp instruments only as instructed. c. Never cut any material towards you— always cut away from your body. d. Report any cut or scratch from sharp instruments to the teacher immediately. 16. Never open storage cabinets or enter the prep/storage room without permission from the teacher. 17. Do not remove chemicals, equipment, supplies, or animals from the science room without permission from the teacher. 18. Handle all glassware with care. Never pick up hot or broken glassware with your bare hands. 19. Use extreme caution when using matches, a burner, or hot plate. Only light burners when instructed and do not put anything into a flame unless specifically instructed to do so. Do not leave a lit burner unattended. 20. Dress properly—long hair must be tied back, no dangling jewelry, and no loose or baggy clothing. Wear aprons when instructed. 21. Learn where the safety equipment is located and how to use it. Know where the exits are located and what to do in case of an emergency or fire drill.
AGREEMENT I, __________________________ , (student’s name) have read and understand each of the above safety rules set forth in this contract. I agree to follow them to ensure not only my own safety but also the safety of others in the science classroom or laboratory. I also agree to follow the general rules of appropriate behavior for a classroom at all times to avoid accidents and to provide a safe learning environment for everyone. I understand that if I do not follow all the rules and safety precautions, I will not be allowed to participate in science activities.
Dear Parent or Guardian: We feel that you should be informed of the school’s effort to create and maintain a safe science classroom/ laboratory environment. Please read the list of safety rules. No student will be permitted to perform science activities unless this contract is signed by both the student and parent/guardian and is on file with the teacher. Your signature on this contract indicates that you have read this Science Safety Contract, reviewed it with your child, and are aware of the measures taken to ensure the safety of your son/daughter in the science classroom.

Mrs. Eiermann's Class Rules and Expectations
1. Always be prepared for class. Bring your binder, pens/pencils, paper, book and stream to class everyday.
2. When the bell rings, be in your seat, working on the Do Now with your homework recorded in your agenda.
3. Out of room passes are restricted. You must be in class so you don't miss anything.
4. Keep an open mind and ear to instructions. It is very hard to hear if your mouth is open so be sure to quiet down quickly when I ask for your attention.
5. Always respect the property of others, so keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
6. Personal notes create many problems. Keep them out of everyone's hands (especially mine!).
7. Food, gum, drinks and applying any make-up are not allowed in class (safety hazard and school policy). Only eat in the lunch room.
8. Take neat and complete notes. If it is on the board, it should be in your notebook. Your success will depend on how well you develop this skill.
9. Learn to meet due dates. A personal calendar can be helpful. Effort is the key to success!
10. Profanity will not be tolerated. Think before you speak.
11. In the event you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed. Make sure you have the telephone number of at least one responsible person in science class, check the clipboard for missed homework and Do Nows and the class folder for papers.
12. Do not forget to do your homework. This is a critical part of the learning process and can have a great impact on your grade.
13. When I give out materials ( ex. Worksheets, instructions for projects, lab papers) each student will receive one copy. If you lose it you must copy a blank one from someone else in 7-3 science.
14. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. If you are unsure whether something would be considered cheating or plagiarism, see me first!
