October is here! In our classroom it means that we are getting into our routine and getting used to being back in school. This month we will explore fire safety. We will discuss fire safety rules, learn how to act in a fire drill at school, and have a visit from the Old Bridge Firefighters. The firefighters will visit us on Friday, October 11th! We will learn about a firefighter's job and how to call 911. It's also important for you to have a plan at home for a fire emergency. Discuss with your child what he/she should do in case of a fire at home.
In math, we are continuing our work with the numbers to 1,000! We are learning about standard form, word form, and expanded form. Here is an example: If you are working with the numeral 256, then 256 is the number in standard form. Two hundred fifty-six is the number in word form and 200 + 50 + 6 is the number in expanded form. We are also learning how to compare numbers and the symbols > (greater than) and < (less than). Our first math test will be coming soon!
In reading we are continuing to work on the comprehension strategy of predicting! We are learning how to look at the pictures and how to pay attention to the words to figure out what will happen next. We learned how to make a Venn diagram to compare characters in a story. When we do this we are thinking more about the story and the characters in the story. This helps us to become better readers!
