As required by law, screening for scoliosis (a lateral curvature of the spine) will be available for students, ages ten through eighteen, every two years. The physical education teachers will screen the students in the middle school for scoliosis every two years. The nurse will recheck any students referred by the physical education teacher and determine whether a referral is necessary. Parents who do not want their child screened must give them a written note excusing them from the screening. Students must present this note to the physical education teachers at the time of the screening.
If you would prefer to have your child’s physician examine your child, at your own expense, have the physician fill out a scoliosis form. Generally, physicians should check for scoliosis as part of a complete physical for any child ten or older.
