Marine Science Courses

  • MARINE SCIENCE CP                  (9630)                    Grade 11-12                        6 Credits

    Prerequisites:

    • Successful completion of Biology CP

    Marine Science CP meets six times a week and has a formal two period lab as part of the instructional process.  There are several autumn and spring curriculum-required field trips to various marine environments. The emphasis in Marine Science CP is placed on student awareness and relationships involving the interaction of our environment and the sea. Topics will include: invertebrate and vertebrate life forms in various marine habitats, the physical and geological aspects of oceans and shorelines, weather and its effect on oceans, the chemistry of marine environments, and environmental concerns. Students will be encouraged to develop an understanding of the impact of the marine surroundings that influence daily life. Conducting both a comprehensive study of local marine environments and super­vised dissections are integral parts of the program.  Previous coursework in Chemistry is also suggested.


    MARINE SCIENCE HONORS                    (9631)                    Grades 11-12       6 Credits (Honors)

    Prerequisites:

    • Minimum course grade of B- in Chemistry Honors, or
    • Minimum course grade of A- in Chemistry CP

    Marine Science Honors is intended for stu­dents who have demonstrated success in previ­ous science and mathematics courses. This course meets six times a week and has a formal two period lab as part of the instructional process. Conducting both a comprehensive study of local marine environments, and supervised dissections are integral parts of the program. There are several autumn and spring curriculum-required field trips to various marine environments. The course will cover the same material as Marine Science CP but will entail a more in depth study of topics and an emphasis on the development of research and labo­ratory skills.
