    This single-part task illustrates what problem solving means in the CCSSM. Although there are many entry points into this problem, students must analyze constraints, relationships, and goals to find all possible solutions. They formulate a solution pathway rather than jump into a solution attempt. Because there are three correct answer choices, students must demonstrate perseverance in finding all the correct answers

    GRADE 4 – Deer in the Park

    In the grade 3 CCSSM, students developed their understanding of area and perimeter by solving real-world and mathematical problems involving rectangles with a missing side length. In the grade 4 CCSSM, students now apply this securely held knowledge for the first time to solve multistep problems.

    This task is innovative because students go much deeper than just demonstrating their ability to solve area and perimeter problems.

    GRADE 4 – Number of Stadium Seats

    Students have developed their understanding of place value in previous grades. Fourth graders are expected to generalize this understanding of place value to multi-digit whole numbers. This three-part task calls for students to demonstrate reasoning skills and a deep conceptual knowledge of place value in atypical ways.

    This task asks students to demonstrate their understanding and explain their thinking in ways to which many American students have not been exposed.

    GRADE 4 – Ordering Juice Drinks

    This single-part task focuses on assessing the Standards for Mathematical Practice using machine-scorable technology. It is a multistep problem requiring students to develop a plan, analyze the information provided, attend to the units involved, and make sense of the quantities and their relationships.
