Mrs. Laurie Shelley

This will be my sixteenth year teaching ELA here at Sandburg, and I am excited to begin it with you! I have a B.A. in English/Education, a M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction, and I have just completed thirty credits in related educational courses. It is my belief that we never stop learning, and I hope to learn much about all of you soon.

I have high expectations, but I am always fair.  Please never be afraid to ask for extra help; I am available during the first twenty minutes of lunch three times each week (I'll let you know which days when my meeting schedule for the year has been finalized). You can also reach out to me before or after class, or through email.  Also, if you feel I have made an error in grading your paper, please let me know!  I am human, and I am not above making mistakes.  I only ask that you address me before or after class, not in the middle of a lesson. :)

In this class, we will be reviewing what you've learned in previous years of ELA and learning new things as well.  The focus will be on making you more sophisticated writers and improving your reading comprehension and vocabulary.  It is my job to prepare you for high school ELA, so expect to be challenged!  Don't worry if you have not done well in previous years; every year is a new beginning; a new step in your journey; a new page in your book.  Decide to succeed, and you will! I am a firm believer in the power of positive thinking!

To that end, I do not allow negativity in my classroom.  My motto is the Golden rule - treat others as you would like to be treated.  If you respect others, they will respect you.  Just be nice!

At home, I am married, and I have three children, three dogs, two cats, and a fish.  My son, John, just got married last June to a beautiful girl named Ashley, so now I have a daughter-in-law as well!  My daughter Jennifer graduated from Monmouth University and has a B.A. in Graphic Arts and Design, and my youngest, Sarah, is now a senior at Montclair State University.  She is majoring in History and Classics, and is minoring in Archaeology, Anthropology, and Myth Studies.  Needless to say, she is a busy girl.

I hope we have wonderful, productive, happy year together! I am looking forward to meeting all of you!

    Welcome to 8-3 ELA!
