Ellen McDermott Grade Nine Center

On September 5, 2012 the Old Bridge Grade Nine Center was formally renamed the Ellen McDermott Grade Nine Center in honor of Ellen McDermott, the longest serving Board of Education Member (40 years) in the State of NJ.

Located at the entrance of the Old Bridge High School campus along Route 516 in Matawan, the former Carl Sandburg Middle School and OBHS 9th Grade annex, now the Ellen McDermott Grade Nine Center, was established around the concept of a small learning community.  The EM-GNC is a school-within-a-school organized within the framework of interdisciplinary teams of English, math, science, and social studies.   Incoming freshmen are linked to a select team of thoughtful, compassionate and attentive staff members who will use research proven best instructional strategies to teach the curriculum as well as address their students’ needs on a more personal level.  Teachers work in a collaborative setting and are committed to the education of the students they share.

It is the mission of the Ellen McDermott Grade Nine Center to assist all incoming freshman with a smooth transition into Old Bridge high school and help meet the rigorous standards of secondary education.

To provide and support programs addressing the unique needs of matriculating freshman resulting in increased student achievement.
