Writer's Workshop

  • Dear Families of Third – Fifth Graders,

In January, Memorial School launched the Writing Workshop. This writing program is a research-based program that is de-signed to foster a love of writing while teaching students to think like writers!

Writing has always been an integral component of the curriculum in our elementary school and the Writing Workshop places even more emphasis on this essential skill. Teachers in grades 3-5 are dedicating 45 minutes – one hour daily on writing. Some of our first and second grade teachers are also piloting this program for the lower primary.

Here are some key components to the Writing Workshop:

DAILY writing is the heart of the Writing Workshop. It is wrapped around mini-lessons designed to teach procedure, writing process, qualities of good writing and editing skills. Sharing and teacher conferring are also key elements. The main purpose of Writing Workshop is to teach the writing cycle to students. You can read more about the Writing Workshop at: http://www.unitsofstudy.com/home.asp. Help support your child’s writing by asking them to tell you about their writing. With your support at home, we will all be celebrating the success of published pieces!
