KELSO'S CHOICES

This conflict-management curriculum for elementary students based on the premise that every child is capable of becoming a peacemaker. Designed around Kelso the Frog, this program offers nine options students can choose from to resolve minor conflicts on their own. Students will be able to determine the difference between minor problems they can handle and serious problems that require an adult’s help.

Students in grades K-3 have been given a copy of the poster above to help them with resolving their own conflicts. Grades 4 and 5 refer to the chart as KC's Wheel which states, "choose 2 to diffuse." To minimize tattling, in my lessons I ask students if they are "in" or "out", which means are you trying to get someone in trouble (tattling) or are you trying to help someone get out of trouble (reporting/"upstanding"). Students learn that it is not their responsibility to tell staff when someone else is doing something wrong unless it is an issue of safety. Please reinforce this message with your children at home.
