Students learn basic expressions and words that are needed in everyday life and learn how to adapt them into questions, answers, commands, and statements. using authentic methods in an immersion environment. The instructional procedure focuses on listening, speaking, reading, and writing through a variety of communicative interactive strategies. Students should expect to have a combination of written work and oral production of the target language in the class. Both types of work are a requirement for the first level, and grades will be based on how well both types of work are completed. Homework in Level I will be assigned for both speaking and writing, and students can expect assignments nearly every day. At the end of the course, students should be able to understand the language well enough to converse in a limited fashion with a native of the country from which the language is studied. As part of the course, the students will be imbued with sensitivity to the customs and culture of the people.

Activities include repeating and creating dialogues, grammatical exercises, which explore real-life situations, and limited role playing in the target language. Students will be able to respond to more complex situational dialogues, and daily participation in conversation or group discussions are expected.
