COVID Quarantine/Isolation Guidelines

The CDC and New Jersey Department of Health have updated their COVID-19 guidance for school settings, shortening the isolation period for COVID-19 positive cases and the quarantine period for those in close contact with a positive case. The Old Bridge Township School District will be implementing new guidelines as it relates to quarantine and isolation of COVID-19 cases based on this guidance.  If your child is currently in an extended quarantine or isolation, you may adjust the timeline for their return by following the guidance below.

Student tests POSITIVE for COVID-19

  1. The student must isolate for at least 5 full days.

  • Day 0 is the day symptoms began or the day of the viral test specimen collection (for individuals with no COVID-19 symptoms).

  • The student may return to school on the 6th day and must be fever-free without fever-reducing medication for at least 24 hours and symptoms must be improving.

Student is SYMPTOMATIC

1.  The student must isolate for at least 5 full days.

  • Day 0 is the day symptoms began.

  • The student may return to school on the 6th day and must be fever-free without fever-reducing medication for at least 24 hours and symptoms must be improving.

2.  With a negative COVID-19 test (NOT A HOME TEST), no isolation is warranted. The school nurse must be provided with a copy of the negative test result from the doctor or lab.

3.  With no potential exposure to Covid–19 in the past 5 days and a written alternate diagnosis from a healthcare provider your child may return to school based on standard exclusions for the diagnosis.

Student is determined to be a CLOSE CONTACT to a Confirmed COVID-19 Positive Case

1.  The student must quarantine for 5 days after the last exposure to the confirmed positive case. Day 0 is the day of close contact to the confirmed positive case.

2.  The student will be permitted to return to school after satisfying the quarantine requirement outlined above provided they do not become symptomatic or test positive for COVID-19 during their quarantine.

3.  If the student becomes symptomatic or tests positive for COVID-19 during the quarantine, the student must isolate and COMPLETE THE SCHOOL COVID-19 REPORT FORM to inform the school of your student’s status.

The close contact does not have to quarantine if the student:

  • is fully vaccinated and has no symptoms, or

    • (Fully vaccinated = 2 weeks after a Pfizer or Moderna second dose; 2 weeks after a Johnson & Johnson single dose.)

  • tested positive for COVID-19 on a viral test and clinically recovered from COVID-19 in the previous 90 days.

Instruction:
Home instruction will be limited to students who meet the criteria as outlined in the district home instruction policy, (Please see board policy 2142). COVID related absences will be marked sick but if seen by a doctor the school nurse can make a notation that the absence was medical

Students in isolation/quarantine will have the option to view the classroom during school hours using a device through February 18, 2022. We will reevaluate the impact of the Pandemic at that time. Please keep in mind teacher interaction will be focused on students in the classroom. The streaming access to the classroom is in place to allow students to remain informed and up to date as their health recovers or they are in quarantine during this shortened period. Your student should log in to Teams to access this option and to view assignments. Parents who choose this option for their student waive privacy of quarantine status.

According to the NJDOH, in order to return to school a student must be fever-free without fever-reducing medication for at least 24 hours and symptoms must be improving.
